Your Child and Surgery

Children's Recovery Room

As you might expect, surgery is often frightening to your child, mostly because the surroundings and the experiences are unfamiliar.  The surgical center staff will work with parents to reassure your child and make him / her feel at ease.  All questions are important to us.  If you or your child are concerned, please feel free to communicate your concerns, we care...

Here is how we can help:

Call us as soon as surgery is scheduled to arrange a personal tour for you and your child, if you so desire.

A Surgical Center nurse will call before the day of surgery to confirm specific instructions about your child's operation.  If you will not be available by phone, please call us the day before surgery, between 8 AM and 4 PM.

We will not leave your child alone, not even for a minute.  From admitting to recovery, our qualified staff will attend to your child's needs.

This is how you can help:

Tell your child what to expect.  Encourage him or her to ask questions.  We are happy to discuss with you and your child at the time of your tour any questions or concerns he / she might have.

Stay with your child.  We recognize that a parent's presence is very comforting to a child.  You may stay with your child until he / she is taken into the operating room, then you will be reunited almost immediately following surgery.

Bring your child's favorite blanket, toy or book.

Accompany your child under 18 years of age.  It does not matter how old your child is - he /she needs and must have your support.  We also request that at one parent or guardian remain at the Naugatuck Valley Surgical Center while the child is at our facility.  A parent or guardian must sign all consents for surgery or procedures if the child is under 18 years of age or unable to sign for any reason.  Guardians must bring written proof of guardianship on the day of surgery.

Tours

We encourage you to bring your child in before surgery to take advantage of a pre-op tour. This will introduce the surgical center environment to you and your child in a relaxed one on one encounter.  This is helpful in in answering  your questions and reducing anxiety for his or her upcoming surgery. Please call us at (203)755-6663 to schedule a tour if interested.
